By Mannie Holmes

Computer software mogul — and newly announced presidential candidate — John McAfee will debut his Spike TV docu-series in spring 2016, the network announced Wednesday.

In six episodes, the series will detail McAfee’s life as the Internet security wiz explains his story in first-person interviews. The show will also provide interviews from close friends and dramatic reenactments to portray McAfee’s life.

The show will include stories of McAfee from his college days in Virginia, the beginning of his career battling computer viruses at Lockheed, his discovery of McAfee and Associate and a murder investigation in Belize that led to his deportation to the United States.

The McAfee Project” is directed by Billy Corben, who also serves as executive producer alongside Alfred Spellman with their banner, rakontur. Impact Future Media with Francois Garcia and Kimberley Berlin are also executive producers.

News of the Spike TV series comes close to the date of another project documenting the life of a tech genius: “Steve Jobs.” The film stars Michael Fassbender as the Apple CEO and hits theaters in October.

SPIKE PRESENTS A LANDMARK TV EVENT Wed, 08 Jul 2015 23:20:39 +0000

New York, NY, July 8, 2015 – Spike presents a six-part television event, “The McAfee Project,*” that will shed light on the brilliant yet complicated tech pioneer John McAfee, viewed by some as the godfather of online security and by others as the master manipulator of fear whose the key figure in a  shocking international murder mystery.

Directed and Executive Produced by Billy Corben (“Cocaine Cowboys”), the docu-series will be centered around McAfee’s first-person interviews and will reveal unanswered questions about his life ranging from drug-fueled college days in Virginia, to learning to battle computer viruses early in his career at Lockheed in the 1980’s, to starting McAfee and Associates in 1987, to the 2012 murder investigation in Belize.

“The incredibly twisted, complicated yet utterly fascinating story of John McAfee has never been told on television,” said Sharon Levy, Executive Vice President, Original Series. “It’s more than just a murder mystery, but a story of the man who invented modern day paranoia and injected his manufactured paranoia into the cultural zeitgeist.

“The McAfee Project” is produced by the critically-acclaimed and Emmy-winning rakontur (“Cocaine Cowboys,” “VH1’s The Tanning of America,” “Dawg Fight”) with Alfred Spellman and Corben as Executive Producers and Impact Future Media with Francois Garcia and Kimberley Berlin as Executive Producers.

The series will also feature first-person interviews with those close to McAfee along with reenactments featuring pivotal seasons in his life. “The McAfee Project” will be shot this summer and air on Spike in 2016.

In April, 2012, John McAfee, a world-renowned billionaire computer anti-virus pioneer, found himself at the center of Central America’s hottest manhunt in recent history. McAfee was named a “person of interest,” but not a suspect, by police officials in Belize following the murder of his neighbor. McAfee went on the run for three weeks before crossing the border into Guatemala. He was detained by Guatemalan authorities soon after entry, and was soon fighting against deportation to Belize.

McAfee claims the police and drug cartels in Belize were out to kill him thus the escape to Guatemala. He also reportedly faked a series of heart attacks to prevent deportation to Belize and aid safe passage back to the United States. Following a lengthy legal battle, he was deported to the United States while his home in Belize mysteriously burned to the ground.

Was this celebrated tech genius really involved in the murder of a neighbor?  Or does he have nefarious enemies out to destroy him and crumble his empire?  Or is the man who earned enormous success and wealth based on the public’s online security fears and paranoia playing another mind-game?

McAfee continues to be a prophet of internet protection.  In 2010, the company he founded (McAfee Associates) was sold to Intel for an incredible $7.8 billion and four years later they announced they would be changing their name from McAfee to Intel Security.  Recently, McAfee launched Future Tense Central, a security and privacy company offering innovative mobile and web applications with the highest degree of security, empowering the user with the knowledge and awareness to make informed decisions about their personal information. Is this another tech game-changer or another example of McAfee manipulating the public’s fear and paranoia?

Sharon Levy is Spike TV’s Executive Vice President, Original Series, Chachi Senior is Senior Vice President of Original Series for Spike TV, and Justin Lacob is Vice President, Original Series.

JOHN MCAFEE’S ENDGAME Sun, 07 Jul 2013 21:23:56 +0000

The software tycoon in conversation with Martin Patriquin MACLEANS MAGAZINE  on Thursday, June 20, 2013

He fled the Central American country of Belize to Portland, Ore., by way of Guatemala and Miami in the wake of his neighbour’s murder, with his 20-year-old girlfriend and a film crew in tow. Yet little is what it seems with John McAfee, 67, the Virginia-raised software developer, who sold his eponymous anti-virus company in the mid-’90s to pursue a life of sun, sex and adrenalin. His life changed—though not necessarily for the worse—when he became a person of interest following the November 2012 killing of American Gregory Faull in Belize. McAfee claims the government wanted to frame him for the murder, and that he orchestrated his own media feeding frenzy to prevent his detainment. His escape from the country was certainly cable news fodder, and will be part of a series of movie and book-related projects by Montreal-based Impact Future Media.
ANTIVIRUS PIONEER SELLING LIFE STORY Sun, 07 Jul 2013 21:01:27 +0000

The international fugitive John McAfee captured headlines last year fleeing Belize police. Now, he’s filmed a documentary about his life with a Montreal company.

By: Jessica McDiarmid News reporter, Toronto Star Published on Friday Jul 05 2013

MONT TREMBLANT, QUE.—The southern town of John McAfee’s youth was a quiet place in the 1950s.

It was an era that seemed, to the young British-born boy with an abusive father, plastic and artificial, one in which everyone was dying of boredom.

So the boy, who would decades later found the ubiquitous antivirus software, changed it, leading the neighbourhood boys out into the forest surrounding Salem, Va., where they built their own world: of freedom, without adults or chores or calls for dinner.

“And it was great,” says McAfee, a tall, lean 67-year-old now. “We got to escape from the real world and create our own.”

He’s been doing it ever since.

Late last year, McAfee ignited a media frenzy as he fled authorities in Belize following the murder of his island neighbour in the small Central American country.

The fame and notoriety kindled during that four-week saga that began last November is now stoking McAfee’s next incarnation, that of a celebrity, cranking out his life story in the form of a documentary, biography, graphic memoir and an upcoming Hollywood film.

He’s drumming up attention, doing interviews and a series of video. The first online video, in which a red-robed McAfee lambasts the antivirus program still bearing his name while seated at a table laden with guns and containers marked “bath salts,” was viewed more than 3.5 million times in its first 10 days on his YouTube channel.

It was the documentary, produced by Montreal’s Impact Future Media that brought McAfee in mid-June to Mont Tremblant, Que., a playground of the rich and famous nestled in the Laurentians a couple hours’ drive north of Montreal.

In rooms on the third floor of the boutique Hotel Quintessence overlooking Lake Tremblant, a crew spent several days filming for the $1-million documentary, titled after his blog, Who is McAfee .

“No matter what, it’s a fascinating story,” said François Garcia, CEO of Impact Future Media , which nabbed intellectual property rights to McAfee’s life story last December. “He’s a very interesting character and a story doesn’t get better than that — you’ve got love, sex, action, jail.”
